SB 890 Threatening to Roll Back Smoke-Free

Yesterday afternoon, the Senate Executive Committee voted 9 - 4 in favor of an amendment to SB 890. This amendment will exempt all riverboat casinos from SB 500, the Smoke-Free Illinois Act.

Voting against were: Righter, Burzynski, Radogno, & Silverstien
Voting in Favor were: Jones, Watson, Viverito, Sieben, Halvorson, Hendon, DeLeo, Clayborne and Martinez.

This legislation is expected to come to a vote in the full Senate as early as this morning -- less than 24 hours after the amendment was assigned to committee.

Casino workers are at a disproportionate risk to exposure to secondhand smoke. We cannot let our lawmakers allow them to continue to be exposed to deadly carcinogens when all other Illinoisans will enjoy the RIGHT to breathe clean air in the workplace!

You can help us protect casino worker health rights by calling your State Senator THIS MORNING (May 30, 2007) and asking him or her to VOTE NO on SB 890.

You can also use the following link to send your Senator an email asking them to VOTE NO on SB 890.

IN THE EVENT THE BILL PASSES THE SENATE TODAY -- PLEASE DO THE SAME FOR THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

If SB 890 reaches the House we will have to pull out all forces to stop it - this week! The legislature is scheduled to adjourn on Thursday, May 31, 2007.
