Voice Your Displeasure - Elizabeth Gorman Attempting to Hold Back Cook County Smoke-Free Ordinance
Today's Daily Southtown reported that South Suburban County Comissioner, Elizabeth Gorman, is petitioning to have the the Cook County smoke-free ordinance held back until 2008. This is a totally unacceptable position that can do nothing but maintain the status quo of turning a blind eye to the dangers of secondhand smoke in the workplace. Elizabeth Gorman needs to hear it from you that health should be the priority for all Illinois citizens and workers. Please contact her office and voice your displeasure with her recent comments:

This issue has been decided and it should remain! It is ridiculous to reverse our county's monumental ordinance that will protect the health of thousands of Cook County workers and residents.
How can the LEADER of the public health committee suggest action that will knowingly hurt the health of your constituents?!
Please everyone call or write the Cook County Board and demand that she withdraw the proposal and grant our county the RIGHT to BREATHE SMOKE-FREE AIR.

Allowing the ban to be postponed is illogical. What is the point of waiting, aside from giving a few more people cancer? Such an attempt by Elizabeth Gorman leads me to believe that she completely disregards the health and wishes of the majority of cook county residents. Perhaps she would think differently if people were smoking in her office.

Haha, gotta love all the do-gooder non-smokers who are posting and yelling for smoke-free establishments.
I'm a non-smoker myself, and I'll give ya do-gooders a hint: Want more smoke-free establishments in Cook County? Vote with your pocketbook and DON'T PATRONIZE any establishments that choose to allow smoking. Easy way that's worked before in making a behavior unacceptable, and would still allow both smokers and non-smokers to have establishments to go to. *sigh*

I like how all the people who post negative comments here don't consider that this is about more than a few "do-gooders" who don't want ot breathe smoke filled air, but that this is a workers rights issue. Yes, it is an annoyance for me to go into a smokey place for a drink, but its down right dangerous for a person to be constantly exposed to proven carcinogens for an 8 hour shift every day of the week. Nobody should have to make the choice between maintaining their health and bringing home a steady pay check. It is down right class descrimination to say that people who can work white collar jobs shouldn't have to work in an environment that would endanger their health, but that people who tend bar or wait tables can either choose to put their health at risk or try to find comparable employment. How many other jobs with flexable schedules and hourly wages can a person pick up steady tips at?
