Smoke-Free Springfield Media

Things have really been heating up in Springfield and resultingly, there has been an absolute ton of media coverage of the debate. Here are some recent acticles and editorials regarding the attack on Springfield's 100 percent comprehensive smoke-free ordinance:

Vote Now! Springfield's Smoke-Free Law Under Fire

Tonight is Springfield's vote on whether to to ammend their current smoke-free law to provide exceptions for bars, restuarants, bowling alleys, and certain fraternal organizations. This important piece of legislation cannot be overturned! Smoke-free laws protect the lives of workers in the hospitalty industry who are under constant exposure secondhand smoke. Everyone deserves to work in an environment free of cancer causing substances.

Dangerous Air in Bars with Smoking

Research conducted by The University of Illinois has confirmed yet again that air inside smoking bars is considerably more dangerous than the air in non-smoking bars. Testing the air quality in various smoking and nonsmoking bars in the Champaign/Urbana area in a 30 minute period revealed a particle average of 313.8 micrograms per cubic meter of air in smoking bars and an average of 15.6 in smoke-free bars. The EPA's current maximum exposure level for outdoor air is 65 micrograms per cubic meter for any 24 hour period.
